Finally: reviving it only to kill it again.
Pattie awoke, and looked around her hastily. She was in a big white bed, with beige wallpapering around her, and a small window up at the top of the room was open, letting in a tiny amount of fresh air. She frowned. How did she end up here?
Suddenly Maureen pokd her head in the door. “Pattie? Are you awake?” She whispered, sounding unhappy. Pattie murmured something indistinctly, cleared her throat, and tried again.
“Um, yes. I think so. Wait, where am I?” Maureen’s eyes wided and she came over to Pattie, sitting down on the bed and stroking her head gently. Pattie found that it hurt, quite a bit, and winced. Maureen smiled sympathetically, and said,
“You were tripping, and you fell down the stairs.” Pattie’s eyes wided, and she suddenly remembered.
“The baby?” She whispered, fearing the answer.
Maureen’s big brown eyes closed for a second. “I’m sorry, Pattie.” She sighed quietly. “The baby miscarried. They had to operate. You’ve been out for a day, now.” Pattie’s jaw quivered slightly, and her blue eyes clouded up with tears. Maureen got up gently and left Pattie.
How could she be so stupid? Why wasn’t George home? He should have been home. If he had been, this mess wouldn’t have happened. She buried her head in her hands, wincing harder and feeling a bandage on her head.
“Why me?” She wept slowly.
She heard footsteps outside her room, and wiped her tears away quickly, wiping her hands on the bedspread. “Yes?” she called out hesitantly.
“Pattie?” Her husband’s head appeared around the corner, and smiled cautiously. She shivered. He awkwardly stuck out his arm, holding a very faded bunch of flowers. “These are for…you. I thought you might like them?” She smiled tightly and nodded, then yawned slowly. He jumped as if she had hit him. “Pattie?”
She looked up. “Yes?” He paused.
“Were you…pregnant?” She bit her nail, and nodded slowly. He looked down. “Are- are you?” Her eyes filled again, and she shook her head.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered quietly. She nodded, tears dropping onto the bedspread. He put the flowers on the bed slowly. “I’m sorry.” He repeated. He backed out of the room, repeating the words like a mantra, more to himself than to her.
She picked up a wilting daisy, and stared at it through her tears. “No you aren’t,” She whispered. “And you never will be.”
