U.S.S.R. was yes, inspired by Chuck Berry's Back in the USA and was a nod to the Beach Boys, a play on "California Girls" I believe. Just a send up, really.

Oh and about "I Dig A Pony", I agree it is basically just John being random. Psychedelia was all about random and flowing words that sound good together like beat poetry. John was always quite brilliant at that. Here's my take though on some of the lyrics FWIW:
I dig a pony Is this a heroin reference? Maybe not it's stretching, but Horse is the street name for heroin so Horse=Pony? Dunno.
Well you can celebrate anything you want Yes you can celebrate anything you want Oh
I do a road hog A groupie?
Well you can penetrate any place you go Hence why I think it's a groupie reference. ;D
Yes you can penetrate any place you go I told you so, all I want is you Everything has got to be just like you want it to Because...
I pick a moon dog Obviously "Johnny and the Moondogs", John's early pre Beatles band
Well you can radiate everything you are Yes you can radiate everything you are
Oh now I roll a stoney A joint, o'course. OR... a nod to the Rolling Stones?
Well you can imitate everyone you know A dig at other bands for "imitating" what they hear the Beatles doing?
Yes you can imitate everyone you know I told you so, all I want is you Everything has got to be just like you want it to Because...
Ooh now I feel the wind blow Um, a Bob Dylan reference? "Blowin' In The Wind"?
Well you can indicate everything you see Yes you can indicate everything you see
Oh now I dug a pony
Well you can syndicate any boat you row Quite random... I don't know WTF? LOL!
Yeah you can syndicate any boat you row I told you so, all I want is you Everything has got to be just like you want it to Because...

Yeah, that's about all I've ever been able to get out of Dig A Pony, but I did come up with a lot of the same ideas as you, Polly, so we're probably on the right track. I think it really is just overwhelmingly random though. "Syndicate any boat you row." XDXDXD

even though I've heard that paul claims that "two of us" was for him and linda, i've always thought that "two of us" was about him and john and that "junk" fit perfectly as a sad part two to "two of us"

When I was younger, I always thought Ticket To Ride was a happy song. LOL! And for some reason I do not remember the drum part being so boom , snare, boom boom, tom-tom or whatever I am trying to say!

In Norwegian Wood, I used to think the part that goes " So, I lit a fire...." was about John setting that girl's apartment on fire.

I have always been convinced that Two Of Us was about Paul and John. It just makes sense, doesn't it?

Yes, I too have always thought it was about Paul and John, and it does make lots of sense that way.

I agree. How could he and Linda have memories "longer than the road that stretches out ahead" if they practically just met? It just makes more sense if it was about John.
