Norwegian Wood? Yes, it's about an affair John had with a journalist. Apparently the song was his way of writing about it so that Cynthia wouldn't actually know that it referred to him and an actual occurance.
The last line about lighting a fire is ambiguous and open to individual interpretation. I believe Pete Shotton once said that he thought it referred to John's habit of burning the furniture in the fireplace as a source of heat during his leaner art school days but I have no idea there since didn't Paul come up with that line?
Is "...so I lit a fire" literal? Did he set fire to her apartment? Or is it saying something else? Did he "light up"... a cigarette or a joint? Hmmm... again left to the individual listener to interpret.
I've heard a few interesting interpretations and read a few on the internet. One was yes, the lesbian angle, which, no doesn't really make sense to me, and another was very interesting, that it's about RINGO and his... first time... with Maureen. Ringo's part Norwegian, so the Norwegian... wood... reference. You get the drift.
"Norwegian Wood" is a play on words in itself... Norwegian Wood... knowing she would.
It's one of my favorite songs, so yeah, I could go on and on. I love the sitar, and the way the melody flows just very simply.
